Byte Bunny merchants are not charged twice for DuitNow QR. Their agreed DuitNow QR transaction rate stays at 0.85%, through Byte Bunny Technology's existing Fiuu payment gateway arrangement, and that rate already includes the applicable DuitNow QR processing charges. • Byte Bunny merchants' agreed DuitNow QR rate is 0.85% through Fiuu, with the applicable DuitNow QR processing charges already included.
  • On an RM10.00 laundromat payment, the transaction fee at 0.85% is RM0.085, before rounding or any other separately agreed charges.
  • The merchant discount rate (MDR) is set by the bank or payment provider that processes the payment, not by the government.
  • On 18 October 2026 the Ministry of Finance called a viral poster claiming QR payment service charges from 1 November 2026 false.
  • Customers pay nothing extra: Bank Negara Malaysia says paying by DuitNow QR "will not attract any additional charges" for individual customers.

As cashless payments become more popular across Malaysia, DuitNow QR has become one of the most convenient ways for businesses to get paid, including self-service laundromats. Talk about DuitNow QR transaction fees has raised concerns among laundromat owners, and some merchants are wondering whether they will have to pay an extra fee on top of their existing payment gateway charge.

At Byte Bunny Technology Sdn Bhd, we believe in keeping payment processing simple, affordable and transparent. The good news for our merchants is simple: your existing DuitNow QR transaction fee remains at 0.85%, with no additional DuitNow QR processing fee imposed on top of this rate.

What is the DuitNow QR transaction fee?

The DuitNow QR transaction fee is the merchant discount rate (MDR): a percentage of each payment that a business accepting DuitNow QR pays to the provider that processes it. DuitNow QR is Malaysia's national QR payment system, operated by Payments Network Malaysia (PayNet), and lets customers pay from participating banking and e-wallet apps with one QR code. The rate depends on the provider and the merchant's own agreement.

Bank Negara Malaysia describes the fee this way:

"The transaction fee applicable for business merchants is known as the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR), which is a common fee associated with the provision of electronic payment services. It is charged based on a percentage of the payment transaction value to cover processing costs."

Bank Negara Malaysia, statement on DuitNow QR payments, 29 September 2023

PayNet's own DuitNow QR page says one DuitNow QR accepts payments from all participating banks, eWallets and third-party providers, and its page for businesses adds that DuitNow QR fees "vary by bank, eWallet, or acquirer". That is why two merchants can pay two different rates for the same kind of payment.

Is there a new government charge on DuitNow QR payments?

No. There is no new government charge on DuitNow QR payments. In October 2026 a poster claiming that QR payments would carry a service charge from 1 November 2026 circulated widely on Facebook and Threads. On 18 October 2026 the Ministry of Finance said the information was false and that no official announcement had been made about imposing QR code payment service charges, as Bernama reported.

The merchant discount rate is a separate charge between a business and its payment provider. Bank Negara Malaysia notes that some providers began charging businesses for DuitNow QR from 1 October 2023, following the end of a temporary fee waiver introduced in 2019. In its report on the poster, Fintech News Malaysia added that "Banks and other payment providers that process these transactions determine the applicable rates", and reported that one bank's revised DuitNow QR merchant fees take effect on 26 October 2026.

Will Byte Bunny merchants be charged twice for DuitNow QR?

No. Byte Bunny merchants using our existing Fiuu payment gateway arrangement are not charged twice. They pay an agreed DuitNow QR transaction rate of 0.85% through Fiuu, and that rate already includes the applicable DuitNow QR payment processing charges. Merchants will not be charged another, separate DuitNow QR processing fee on top of the existing 0.85%.

How much is the fee on an RM10 laundromat payment?

On an RM10.00 payment at a self-service laundromat, a Byte Bunny merchant's DuitNow QR transaction fee is RM0.085, which is 0.85% of the payment, and the additional DuitNow QR processing fee is RM0.00. The table shows the same RM10.00 payment line by line, as Byte Bunny Technology sets it out for its merchants.

DescriptionAmount
Customer paymentRM10.00
Transaction fee (0.85%)RM0.085
Additional DuitNow QR processing feeRM0.00
Total transaction feeRM0.085

The figures illustrate the percentage-based fee before applicable rounding or any other separately agreed charges. There is no double charging of the DuitNow QR transaction processing fee.

Why do DuitNow QR transaction fees exist?

DuitNow QR transaction fees exist because electronic payments need infrastructure to be processed quickly and securely. Transaction processing fees help pay for the payment network, payment processing, system maintenance and security, which matches Bank Negara Malaysia's explanation that the MDR is charged "to cover processing costs".

A merchant discount rate is a standard feature of many electronic payment services. Some providers may waive the charge for eligible merchants, while others offer their own agreed merchant rates. For Byte Bunny merchants under the existing Fiuu arrangement, the DuitNow QR rate remains 0.85%.

The customer is not the one paying this fee. Bank Negara Malaysia states that for individual customers, using DuitNow QR to make payments "will not attract any additional charges".

How does Byte Bunny's cashless payment work at a laundromat?

Byte Bunny Technology specialises in cashless payment for self-service laundromats. Each washing machine or dryer has its own QR code: the customer scans it with a banking or e-wallet app and pays, and once the payment is confirmed, the system starts that machine. How paying by QR works at a self-service machine walks through each step, and customers can follow the guide to paying a washer or dryer by DuitNow QR.

For laundromat operators, Byte Bunny's system cuts manual cash collection, makes every transaction easier to see and gives customers a convenient way to pay. We understand that transaction costs matter, particularly when individual payments are small. Owners follow sales and transaction history in the Byte Bunny Portal; see cashless QR payment for coin and token laundromats for what the upgrade involves.

  • The rate already includes the applicable DuitNow QR processing fee.

Frequently asked questions

Do customers pay a fee when they pay a laundromat machine by DuitNow QR?

Separately, on 18 October 2026 the Ministry of Finance said a poster claiming QR payment service charges from 1 November 2026 was false and that no such announcement had been made.
